Super excited that our school is embarking on a new journey....read on to find out all about it!
Hyde Park Elementary School is excited to announce it has embarked on a literacy teaching and learning model called Literacy Collaborative (LC). LC is a comprehensive school improvement model based on the extensive work of literacy experts Irene Fountas of Lesley University and Gay Su Pinnell of Ohio State University. HPES faculty will focus on continuous improvement in the expertise of its teachers and the literacy competencies of all students. Funding for this work is through a federal grant.
The goal of the model is to build understandings and instructional practices of every teacher, the school’s culture, and organizational structure. When seeking to improve student achievement, in-depth professional development and coaching assures high quality instruction that meets the needs of every learner. The LC model helps the principal and teachers work as a team to provide a cohesive, consistent approach and to document achievement in literacy instruction across grade levels.
HPES began this long-term school improvement initiative when four teachers, Erin Neckers, Kim Myette, Jean Foss-Pratt, Donna Cullivan, and principal, Diane Reilly, recently attended the Literacy Leadership Team Institute at Lesley University. The Literacy Leadership Team will support and facilitate the school improvement process which is integral to the success of the initiative. The Literacy Leadership Team will analyze student achievement data, monitor program implementation, evaluate program results, and communicate with the greater school community.
Next summer, two teachers from Hyde Park, Donna Cullivan and Erin Neckers, will begin rigorous training to develop their leadership, coaching and teaching expertise through face-to-face instruction and online learning. Once their training is complete, these two teachers, with the support of Lesley University faculty, will facilitate professional development and coaching at Hyde Park. Through the ongoing professional development and coaching, Hyde Park teachers will continue their learning around how to differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of students, improve their teaching practice, and create a more cohesive professional community and student learning environment.
